"But...he can kick butt with a Monkey Organ!"

My sister once said the word, "butt"....and my dad actually yelled at her. If you know my daddy, you know that he doesn't yell. But, he yelled about that. So, I take that word seriously and try not to use it often but when my ultra sophisticated friend, Stacey, said it yesterday I went into fits of laughter and almost fell out of my chair. I do have a little story to go with this...

We were all sitting around at church in the basement. Some might even call it a "Fellowship Hall" but in our church...it's a basement. The children were practicing for singing at VBS next week and the "ladies" were enjoying grown-up conversation and sandwiches from the commissary and then it happened - someone mentioned that our Chaplain was retiring and then a younger girl in the group (because those of us in our late 30's are so mature...) said, "Well, he's grumpy - He SHOULD retire." We laughed because he is a little grumpy...I would say he is like a grandpa when all of the grandkids come over and start messing with his war trophies. He seems "put out" most of the time. But, Chaplains are like a potluck. Sometimes you get a delicious family recipe that took hours to prepare and sometimes you get the "non-cook" who threw something together at the last minute....It's a crap shoot! So we sat there in semi-silence knowing that this was NOT appropriate (it's like ragging on Jesus' special little helper...) and Stacey pipes up with, "But...he can kick butt with a monkey organ!".

As it turns out, our grumpy friend plays a European Monkey Organ. You know, turn the handle, the monkey dances, you wear a cute hat and music fills the air! A MONKEY ORGAN! And, he came to the Vacation Bible School "kick-off" with the organ...no monkey...but a cute little tyrolian hat. Good heavens! There are still surprises in this world that make me howl with laughter!!!

Stacey promised me a picture and I can't wait to show you...but for now...when someone says something bad about someone and you really don't know WHAT to say (like, "Please don't gossip, it hurts my ears!")...say something positive and uplifting like, "BUT...he can kick butt with a monkey organ!!" Perfect...
